Lavender Oil – If You Could Only Choose One

One of the biggest concerns of the elderly is fear of falling.  As we age, we often experience balance instability, physical weakness, and cognitive impairment.  Couple these risk factors with higher use of psychotropic medications, and falling is a real risk.

A recent study done in nursing homes in Japan, reveals that when lavender was used in nursing homes, the incidence of falls declined.

Lavender is an adaptogen.  This means it provides what the body needs at the time.  Lavender is known for its sedating and calming effects.  Ok, so if I want to relax and rest, then lavender would be a good choice oil. But, if the body is in a slump period, as folks often experience midday, olfactory use of lavender oil can be energizing . 

The study also showed that the test group exposed to the lavender oil actually experienced increased cognitive levels and higher concentration levels during the fatigue period than did the placebo group.  This study has ramifications to folks at all age levels, from kids in school, mom and dad at work to the elderly.  Try diffusing lavender and see if you experience higher levels of concentration!
