Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy examines the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. By exploring patterns of thinking that lead to self-destructive actions and the beliefs that direct these thoughts, people can modify their patterns of thinking to improve coping. Psychotherapy is successfully used to treat a wide range of disorders including phobias, addictions, depression, anger and relationship issues and anxiety.

Focused on Helping Specific Problems

Behavioral therapy is usually short-term and focused on helping clients deal with a very specific problem. During the course of treatment, people learn how to identify and change destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior.

Beliefs, Thoughts and Feelings Affect Our Behavior

The underlying concept is that our beliefs, thoughts and feelings play a fundamental role in our behavior.

For example, a person who spends a lot of time thinking about plane crashes, runway accidents, and other air disasters may find themselves avoiding air travel. A person who is depressed may have the belief, “I am worthless,” and a person with panic disorder may have the belief, “I am in danger.” While the person in distress likely believes these to be ultimate truths, with a therapist’s help, the individual is encouraged to challenge these irrational beliefs.

The therapist and patient together search for patterns in thinking that can cause the patient to have negative thoughts which can lead to negative feelings and self-destructive behaviors.

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

The goal is to teach the client that while they cannot control everything about life, they can choose how the think about and interpret things in the life. This can bring a real sense of peace and content where anxiety and fear existed before.
